Introduction

Congratulations on your new furniture selection and thank you for choosing Nirvana Swing Company™. We hope that your Nirvana Swing will be a comfortable and relaxing addition to your home for many years to come.

This booklet has been designed to assist you in the care and enjoyment of your furniture. Please refer to it for important operating instructions, safety information, furniture care and leather care advice, and warranty information. Please review this information thoroughly before installing and enjoying your Nirvana Swing.

U.S. Patent 5,618,016, European Patent 0 777 431, and other patents and pending applications.

Initial Setup

Placement: Place your Nirvana Swing on a flat, level surface with no obstructions in front of or behind the chair. Allow at least 21 inches of clearance in front of the chair and 21 inches behind it. For maximum enjoyment, ensure that nothing is touching your Nirvana Swing. Any friction will affect the swinging motion.

Assembly: First, ensure that the four chair feet are screwed all the way into the base of the chair. Your Nirvana Swing separates into two pieces (a base and a back) for easy transportation. After installing the feet and placing the base of your Nirvana Swing in the desired location, you are ready to attach the back. Please use two people to attach the back to the base as you want to be careful not to damage the chair. You will notice that the back of the chair has two metal channels attached to the inside of its wooden frame. These channels fit easily onto the two metal prongs protruding from the base. While one person holds the back upright over the base, have the second person guide the metal channels onto the metal prongs. The second person may need to gently and slightly move the metal prongs of the base until they fit completely into the metal channels of the back. You should not encounter any resistance when placing the back onto the base; please do not try to force it into place. If you ever need to separate the back from the base for moving purposes, please use two people again. To release the metal channels of the back from the metal prongs of the base, have one person gently pull inward on the clamps attached to the metal channels of the chair's back. While gently squeezing these clamps inward, have the second person pull straight up on the back to remove it from the base. You should not encounter any resistance when removing the back from the base; please do not try to force the separation.

Leg Covers: Two decorative wooden leg covers have been included with your Nirvana Swing. These covers will fit snugly over the metal legs of the chair. Take care in placing these covers on the legs as they are fragile. With the long end of the leg cover toward the rear of the chair, position the cover sideways with the open side facing inward toward the chair. Then, place the leg cover directly against the metal leg of the chair and rotate the cover into an upright position with the open side facing down toward the floor. Once upright, gently press down on the leg cover to secure it into place. You should not encounter any resistance when placing these covers on the legs; please do not try to force them into place.

Operating Instructions

Swing: Sit in the chair, lean backward with your shoulders, and push forward on the arms to recline.

To swing, gently push or pull on either of the small handles located on the inside of each arm. Once you are swinging, only an occasional light push or pull on either handle is necessary to maintain the motion. Simply use slight pressure with your thumb or index finger.

To stop swinging, you can allow the chair to come to a natural rest or you can firmly hold the handles to slow the swinging motion.

When the swinging stops, lean forward and push down with your feet to return the recliner to the upright position.

Allow the chair to come forward until it locks and can no longer move forward or backward. Then stand to exit your Nirvana Swing.

Balance: Each Nirvana Swing is pre-balanced at the factory on a smooth, level surface. Because the exact balance will vary slightly from person to person and from floor to floor, you may need to adjust your Nirvana Swing for proper balance before use.

To check the balance, sit in the chair and push forward on the arms to recline. To begin the swinging motion, simply push or pull on the small handles located on the inside of the arms. The Nirvana Swing is designed to provide approximately 10 inches of swinging motion in both the forward and backward directions; when the 10 inches are exceeded, the mechanism will encounter rubber stops in either direction. The Nirvana Swing will only encounter the stops if you are swinging more than 10 inches in either direction or if the chair is not properly balanced. When properly balanced and normally swinging (less than 10 inches in both directions), the chair should not touch either of the stops. When normally swinging, if the chair hits either the forward or backward stop with substantial force but does not touch the stop at the other end, then you should adjust the balance of your Nirvana Swing.

You can adjust the balance of your Nirvana Swing by raising or lowering the adjustable feet (located at each corner of the chair’s metal base). The feet can be easily adjusted by turning them clockwise or counter-clockwise, similar to turning a screw. If the chair hits the front stop forcefully but does not touch the back stop, then you will need to raise the front of the chair. If the chair hits the back stop forcefully but does not touch the front stop, then you will need to lower the front of the chair. To adjust the feet, remove the decorative wooden leg covers and turn the feet by hand until properly balanced. Use caution when lifting or tilting the Nirvana Swing to adjust the feet. Lifting or tilting could result in damage to the chair or, more importantly, in injury to you.

Important Safety Information

Moving Parts: The Nirvana Swing utilizes many moving parts that could be hazardous to children and pets as well as to adult fingers and limbs. Before and while using, ensure that all moving parts – the small metal handles in the arms, the swing mechanism under the chair, the footrest, and all other moving parts of the Nirvana Swing – are clear of limbs and other obstructions.

Children: Do not allow children to play on the furniture or operate the mechanism. When the swinging mechanism is moving, make certain that children remain a safe distance away as they could be injured by the chair’s many moving parts. Ensure that children keep their fingers, hands, and all limbs away from the chair’s small metal handles, as the moving handles could cause injury. Additionally, the leg rests of all recliners fold down and could result in injury to a child.

Automatic Locking Device: The Nirvana Swing incorporates an automatic locking device that prevents the chair from swinging when in the upright (non-reclined) position. To prevent potential injury, always allow the chair to come forward into the locked position before standing and exiting. In addition, the chair should always be upright and in the locked position when entering the chair. Do not attempt to enter the chair when it is in the reclined position.

Proper Use: The Nirvana Swing is a sophisticated relaxation product and utilizes a precision mechanism to achieve its swinging motion. Use this product only for its intended use as described in this manual. Do not race, play with, or abuse the mechanism.

Soft Stops: The Nirvana Swing provides approximately 10 inches of swinging motion in both the forward and backward directions. Gentle pressure on the small inside arm handles is all that is required to swing the chair. Excessive force on the handles can cause the chair to swing beyond the normal 10 inches of travel. When this happens, the swing will hit against rubber stops in either direction. Simply stop using the handles for a while until the chair slows down into a normal range. Do not purposely drive the chair into the rubber stops or push repeatedly with excessive force, as this can result in damage to the mechanism.

Lifting: Only lift your Nirvana Swing from the bottom of the chair. Lifting from the top of the arms or by using the handles inside the arms could cause damage to the chair. Never try to lift or move the Nirvana Swing alone. At least two people should be involved in lifting or moving the chair.

Weight Capacity: The Nirvana Swing is designed for an occupant of up to 275 pounds. The Nirvana Swing is not designed for use by more than one occupant, regardless of the weight of each individual.

Furniture Care Tips

Avoid placing your furniture in direct sunlight, as excessive light will cause leather and all other upholstery materials to fade over time. Try to maintain at least two feet between your furniture and heating sources, as prolonged exposure to heat vents or radiators can cause your leather to dry out. Avoid placing newspapers and magazines on the surface of your furniture, as the ink can bleed into the material and cause permanent damage.

Remember that leather is a natural product and requires some care to maintain the natural beauty of the hide; when properly cared for, leather will maintain its beauty and appearance for many years. The use of a high-quality leather conditioner is recommended every 6-12 months. Take extra care with sharp instruments and animal claws. Leather is much stronger than upholstery but will puncture with force, causing need for a difficult repair. For minor or slight scratches on the surface, use a chamois or clean fingers to gently buff the scratch. If needed, moisten very lightly with distilled water to work scratches out.

Leather has elasticity and forms according to the amount of use an area gets. Just as new shoes need some breaking in, so does your leather chair. This stretching is not a defect but an inherent natural quality of the leather.

Leather Cleaning

Normal Care: Under normal usage conditions, regular dusting and vacuum cleaning in crevices is all that is necessary to clean your furniture. Take care to use a non-abrasive cloth, and avoid rubbing a vacuum accessory directly against the leather.

Minor Spots and Spills: Blot – do not wipe – excess liquid immediately with a clean absorbent cloth or sponge. If necessary, use a lightly moistened soft cloth with clean lukewarm water and let air dry naturally. Do not dry with hair dryers, etc. Do not use soap or soak the stain heavily with water.

Stubborn Stains: If the stain persists, it is recommended that the leather be cleaned by a professional leather specialist to avoid any potential damage to the leather.

Oily Substances: Blot – do not wipe – excess butter, oil, chocolate, or other greasy substances off the leather with a clean dry cloth. Take care not to apply pressure to prevent residue from entering the pores of the leather. Then leave it alone as the spot should dissipate into the leather after a short period of time. Do not apply water or try to wash an oily spot.

Do not use saddle soap, bleach, cleaning solvents, furniture polish, oils, varnish, abrasive cleaners, detergent soaps or ammonia water.

These are recommended or suggested methods of cleaning. Always try any cleaning method in a hidden area first to see the results. Nirvana Swing Company™ is not responsible for damage incurred while cleaning.
